THE PRODIGAL SON
THE PRODIGAL SON… AND HIS BROTHER. (LUKE 15:11-32)
This
is one story we’re all familiar with. So
without beating around the bush, I’ll just go straight to the point.
The
first son.
Luke
15:12 “And the younger of them said to his
father, Father, give me the portion of goods that is coming to me. And he divided his living to them.”
Luke 15:29
“And answering he said to his father, Lo, these many years I
have served you, neither did I transgress your commandment at any time. And yet
you never gave me a kid so that
I might make merry with my friends.”
According
to verse 12, the father divided his inheritance amongst his sons. But in verse
19, the first son complained that his father never gave him a young goat to
share with his friends... the same son to whom was given a greater share of his
father’s property. According to the whole story, the son didn’t ask, but he was
expecting his father to give him. This is a bit similar to us, the day we got
saved/ born-again, we had access to receiving a lot of promises; Divine healing
protection provision, promotion… and Eternal Life. The thing is we either don’t
ask, or when we ask, we ask with the wrong motives. (John
14:14 James 4:3). Like
the son was diligent in serving his father and never transgressing His
commandment, we also must be diligent in serving God and keeping His
commandment. This qualifies us for asking whatever we want from God, as long as
it’s in His present will for us, and not above our present spiritual level.
This son was a bit similar to Elisha, in the sense
that, even though Elisha had “the double anointing”, more than enough power to
heal himself, he died of a sickness. Yet a dead man was resurrected by touching
Elisha’s bones i.e. he was healed by the remnant power in Elisha’s bones The
prodigal son (Luke
15:21-22)… After the son repented and humbly forsook his sins, He
was forgiven and accepted back.
Luke 15:22 “But the father
said to his servants, Bring the best robe and put it on him. And put a ring on his hand and shoes on his feet.”
The
best robe, a ring and shoes.
The robe symbolizes
righteousness/ God’s hope of you becoming righteous and glorious like His Son
Jesus Christ.
The ring symbolizes authority (backed
with faith) not just over people, but also over the devil. (1 sJohn 4:4,
Romans 8:37)
The shoes, with reference to the
“Armor of God/ Love”, this represents the “feet shod with the gospel of peace,
you can say it symbolizes the “Great Commission”. (Mark: 14-18)
This
is expected of every born again. When the prodigal son returned home, his
father threw a feast to celebrate his return. Likewise you and I, there was rejoicing
in heaven when you got saved. Don’t let their rejoicing over you be in vain; go
out there preach the gospel, through your words, “your actions and reactions”
towards men. Be a diligent preacher and doer of His Word. And if you have any
need, you can always ask God, He’s just a prayer away. Just make sure you act
in faith, and discern wisely before you act.
Grace be with you. Amen!
